Poland 2008 Karol Beyer History of Polish Photography series

Stamp. Poland 2008. The four-stamp series "History of Polish Photography" honors Karol Beyer (1818–1877), one of the most important Polish photographers of the 19th century. The first stamp presents the artist's self-portrait taken in 1858. The other three stamps are based on photographs made by Beyer in 1866: "Peasants from Wilanów", "St. Cross Church" in Warsaw, and "Russian troops camp site at Castle Square in Warsaw". This selection reflects both Beyer's artistic and documentary approach, as well as the social and historical landscapes of 19th-century Poland.
