D uring the early decades of the Turkish Republic, photography was rapidly gaining popularity across the country. While major cities such as Istanbul and İzmir enjoyed relatively easy access to cameras and photographic supplies, obtaining such equipment in provincial cities remained considerably more challenging. In many parts of Anatolia, local stationers, booksellers, and technical supply stores became essential sources for photographers seeking cameras, film, photographic paper, and other specialized materials. Among these businesses, K. Şevket Mektepliler Pazarı in Samsun occupied a noteworthy position. Although largely forgotten today, surviving documents reveal that the establishment played a significant role not only as a stationery and bookstore but also as an important retailer of photographic equipment during the early Republican period.

The inspiration for this study comes from a commercial letter dated 24 May 1934, recently added to my personal collection. Far more than a routine piece of business correspondence, this document provides valuable insight into the commercial life of Samsun and offers rare evidence of the city's photographic trade during the 1930s. Such surviving documents allow us to reconstruct the activities of local businesses that once served an important role in introducing modern photographic technology to regional markets.

Although the exact founding date of the company has not yet been confirmed through official archival records, available sources suggest that Mektepliler Pazarı had already become a recognized commercial name during the late Ottoman and early Republican periods.

The Samsun branch appears to have been managed by K. Şevket, later identified in official records as Şevket Akar. Electoral records from 1950 describe him simply as the "owner of Mektepliler Pazarı," indicating that the business remained active for at least two decades. While no definitive documentation has yet been found establishing either the opening or closing dates of the Samsun establishment, existing evidence confirms that it operated throughout a significant part of the 1930s and was still well known in the city by 1950.

The company's letterhead dated 24 May 1934 offers particularly valuable information regarding the scope of its activities. Beneath the business name appears the description "Stationery, Photography and Bookstore." Additional text advertises office supplies, school equipment, photographic materials, modern cameras, textbooks, newly published works, and novels. These details demonstrate that Mektepliler Pazarı functioned as far more than an ordinary stationery shop. Instead, it represented a diversified commercial enterprise serving educational, literary, and photographic needs simultaneously.

One of the most striking features of the document is the prominent Kodak Film logo printed on the upper section of the letterhead. During the 1930s, internationally recognized manufacturers generally permitted the use of their trademarks on commercial stationery only by businesses actively selling their products. Although no surviving dealership agreement has yet been located, the presence of the Kodak logo strongly suggests that K. Şevket Mektepliler Pazarı regularly offered Kodak photographic films and likely distributed other Kodak products as well. This small detail provides important evidence for understanding how international photographic brands reached regional markets in northern Turkey.

Additional archival material reinforces this conclusion. A surviving photographic storage envelope bearing the name Kağıtçı Şevket features an advertisement promoting Zeiss Ikon Ortho Ultra photographic film with the slogan, "Excellent photographs can be produced only with Zeiss Ikon Ortho Ultra films." This advertisement demonstrates that the business marketed products from one of Germany's leading photographic manufacturers in addition to Kodak. The coexistence of American and German photographic brands within the same establishment reflects the diversity of photographic equipment available to customers in Samsun during the interwar period.

It is worth noting that the Turkish expression "fotoğraf levazımı" (photographic supplies), frequently encountered in commercial documents of the era, referred to a remarkably broad range of products. The term generally included cameras, roll film, glass plates, photographic paper, developing chemicals, enlargers, tripods, lenses, flash equipment, albums, and various darkroom accessories. Consequently, the services advertised on the company's letterhead indicate that customers could obtain nearly every essential item required for amateur or professional photography from a single local retailer.

The content of the 1934 letter itself further illustrates the firm's commercial network. Addressed to Afitap Stationery in Istanbul, the correspondence concerns Edison fountain pens, pen nibs, pricing, and product deliveries. Beyond the specific order being discussed, the language of the letter clearly reflects an ongoing business relationship between the two companies. References to previous shipments imply that Mektepliler Pazarı maintained regular commercial ties with suppliers in Istanbul, enabling the business to bring newly introduced products to Samsun on a consistent basis.

Businesses such as K. Şevket Mektepliler Pazarı played an important, though often overlooked, role in the spread of photography throughout Anatolia. While professional studios naturally occupy an important place in photographic history, they depended upon reliable suppliers capable of providing cameras, film, chemicals, and accessories. Local merchants bridged the gap between international manufacturers and provincial consumers, making photographic technology accessible far beyond Turkey's largest cities. In this respect, Mektepliler Pazarı deserves recognition as part of the commercial infrastructure that supported the growth of photography during the formative years of the Republic.

Although many aspects of the company's history remain to be discovered, the surviving evidence already allows a clearer understanding of its significance. The combination of stationery, books, educational materials, and internationally recognized photographic products illustrates the broad commercial vision of the business. Its connections with suppliers in Istanbul and its association with leading photographic brands such as Kodak and Zeiss Ikon further demonstrate that it was much more than a neighborhood stationery shop.

Today, nearly a century after the letter was written, this single document serves as an important historical witness. It not only records an ordinary commercial transaction but also preserves valuable evidence of the photographic trade, local commerce, and everyday business life in Samsun during the early Republican period. Future archival discoveries may reveal additional details concerning the company's foundation, ownership, and eventual closure. Until then, the surviving documents already establish K. Şevket Mektepliler Pazarı as one of the noteworthy businesses contributing to the distribution of photographic technology in northern Turkey during the first half of the twentieth century.
