İstanbul-based Photographic Equipment Dealer (1930–1950)

This envelope belonged to Lümiyer, a company operating in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, specializing in photographic equipment and consumable materials. The business was operated by Mateos Kalumenos, a Greek (Rum) merchant active within Istanbul's multicultural commercial environment. Lümiyer was active approximately between 1930 and 1950, after which the company ceased its operations.

The name "Lümiyer" is a Turkish adaptation inspired by Auguste and Louis Lumière, pioneers of photography and cinematography in the late nineteenth century. The firm traded cameras, photographic films, and related accessories catering to both amateur and professional photographers.

Photography entered the Ottoman Empire in the 1840s and expanded rapidly during the Republican era through companies importing equipment from Europe—particularly brands such as Kodak and Agfa. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Lümiyer became one of the local enterprises representing the growth of Turkey's photographic market, closely linked to the rise of cinema and photojournalism.

The recipient indicated on the envelope is NYDQVIST / HOLM, a name derived from the Swedish firm Nydqvist & Holm AB (NOHAB), whose origins date back to the mid-nineteenth century. The company was active across Europe in heavy industry, machinery manufacturing, steam and diesel locomotives, and engineering equipment, and was recognized as a significant technical producer during the later stages of the Industrial Revolution.
