J. Pappo Studio – Swiss Photographic Letterhead
This envelope represents a commercial correspondence item originating from a photographic and cinema equipment business operating in Switzerland and constitutes a noteworthy example of ephemera documenting the local commercial networks of the photographic industry during the second half of the twentieth century. The printed information on the envelope identifies the sender as "Photo – Ciné J. Pappo," a photographic shop located on Grand'Rue in Château-d'Oex. Château-d'Oex is a small Alpine town in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Historically known for tourism, mountain activities, and scenic landscapes, the region provided a favorable environment for photographic activity throughout the twentieth century. The presence of photographic studios and photographic supply shops in such tourist areas was therefore common.
The printed designation "Photo – Ciné" indicates that the establishment was involved not only in photography but also in the sale or servicing of amateur cinema equipment. From the 1950s onward amateur film cameras became increasingly popular in Europe, and many photographic retailers expanded their services to include cinematic equipment. Shops of this type typically sold cameras, photographic film, printing paper, and chemical processing materials while also offering film development and printing services.
The inscription "Ne pas plier" printed on the envelope indicates that the contents were sensitive and should not be folded. Another printed line states "Photos: 2," clearly specifying that the envelope contained two photographic prints. This suggests that the envelope was used to deliver finished photographic prints to a customer. During the mid-twentieth century it was common practice for photographic studios to mail developed photographs directly to clients. Such envelopes were often produced from relatively rigid paper in order to protect photographic prints from damage during transit.
