Date of use : 1954 Sweden
Sweden: American Photographic Publishing Co. Stationery
The cover was sent from the Stockholm-based firm Handels- & Fabriks AB Atlas to the American Photographic Publishing Co., which was active in New York. The "Par avion / Luftpost" marking clearly indicates that the item was carried by transatlantic airmail. The Swedish stamps used and the total postage correspond precisely to the official Sweden–USA commercial airmail rates of the period, confirming that the cover was not prepared for philatelic purposes but represents a genuine business correspondence. Furthermore, the Swedish stamp commemorating the 1954 World Cup firmly dates the mailing to that year.
American Photographic Publishing Co. played a significant role in photographic publishing in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. The company is best known for publishing American Photography, a long-running magazine that became one of the most influential photographic periodicals of its time. Aimed at both amateur and professional photographers, the magazine featured technical articles, equipment reviews, aesthetic discussions, and news from photographic communities. Its approach to photography not merely as a profession but as an evolving cultural form distinguished it from many contemporary publications. American Photography and its publisher remained active until the early 1950s. Around 1953, the magazine was absorbed into a larger publishing structure, marking the end of American Photographic Publishing Co. as an independent publisher. This transition reflects a broader postwar trend in which specialized photographic publishers were incorporated into expanding media conglomerates.
