Adalberk Martinek – German Studio Metered Cover

This envelope represents an interesting example of commercial correspondence originating from a tourist photography business operating in the Harz region of Germany. The red printed text at the top of the envelope reads "Höhlenfotografie in der Tropfsteinhöhle des Harzes – Hermannshöhle, Baumannshöhle, Barbarossahöhle (Kyffhäuser)," indicating that the sender specialized in cave photography services offered to visitors exploring the stalactite caves of the Harz Mountains. The name Adalbert Martinet, Rübeland (Harz) appears below the description, suggesting that he was the proprietor or operator of the photographic service. The Harz Mountains constitute one of the oldest tourist regions in Germany, and their limestone caves have attracted visitors since the nineteenth century due to their remarkable geological formations.
The town of Rübeland is particularly well known for the Hermannshöhle and Baumannshöhle, two of the most famous stalactite caves in the Harz region. By the early twentieth century these caves had been developed as tourist attractions and guided tours were regularly organized for visitors. As part of the tourist experience, photographers often offered souvenir photographs taken inside or near the caves. The inscription "Höhlenfotografie" on the envelope confirms that the sender operated such a photographic service for visitors.
