Sukiya Camera Receipt from 1972 in Ginza Tokyo
A receipt dated November 16, 1972, from Sukiya Camera, one of Ginza's most famous shopping districts, is preserved in the collection. The company continues to operate today and is particularly specialized in the resale of many brands, with a focus on Leica. The receipt indicates the purchase of an Olympus 35 RC, marked as "Olympus RC," along with a leather case. Despite its small size, this rangefinder camera was technologically advanced and represented the essence of compact photography in its era. The fact that the price was recorded in U.S. dollars demonstrates that Sukiya Camera did not limit itself to domestic sales but also served international customers. A Japanese revenue stamp and the store's red seal affixed at the bottom transform the receipt from a simple piece of paper into a remarkable example of ephemera. Ultimately, this Sukiya Camera receipt sheds light not only on the sale of cameras in the 1970s but also on the cultural and economic fabric of Japan at that time.
