Underwood & Underwood: Pioneers of Stereoscopic Photography

Underwood & Underwood was an American photography agency and publishing company that was a pioneer in stereoscopic photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was founded in 1881 in Kansas by two brothers, Bert Elias Underwood (1862–1943) and Elmer Underwood (1859–1947). The company initially focused on the sale and distribution of stereoscopic images. As the demand for stereoscopic images grew, the Underwood brothers expanded their company to meet this demand. Stereoscopes used photographs taken with a twin-lens camera to create a three-dimensional effect. 

The company offered stereoscopic photographs taken from all around the world, allowing many people to experience different geographies and cultures.By the late 1920s, the popularity of stereoscopic photographs began to decline with the rise of cinema and print media. During this period, Underwood & Underwood also focused on other areas, including photojournalism, but was unable to sustain its previous success. By the late 1940s, Underwood & Underwood began selling a large portion of its photographic archives and copyrights, a process that ultimately led to the company's closure.Underwood & Underwood left an important legacy in both stereoscopic photography and photojournalism. 

The company played a significant role in popularizing stereoscopic images and made important contributions to news photography worldwide. Today, the photographic collections of Underwood & Underwood are held in many museums, libraries, and private collections and are considered valuable historical documents.

The information on the envelope gives clients important details such as how to preserve their proofs and how much to pay for re-sessions. It also states that the images will be smoothed and unwanted marks will be removed.

John Carbutt and the Invention of Dry Gelatin Plates

Born in England in 1832, Carbutt immigrated to the United States in 1853 and began his photography career in Philadelphia. In 1866, he established his own photography studio and later ventured into the production of photographic materials. Under the name Keystone Dry Plate Works, Carbutt founded a company that produced dry gelatin photographic plates. These plates represented a significant innovation in photography towards the end of the 19th century, being more convenient and portable compared to wet collodion plates.

 Carbutt's firm not only manufactured dry plates but also produced various other photographic materials and equipment, including different types of films, exposure meters, and other photography accessories. Carbutt was a pioneer in the development of dry plates and initiated their commercial production starting in 1879, producing the world's first commercial dry gelatin plates. Additionally, in the late 1890s, he developed specialized plates for X-ray film production, which constituted a major advancement in the field of medicine. He then bought a four-wheeled car for three hundred dollars and added a traveling photographer to his job description. He did most of his work in his home region. He came to Brattleboro in 1856 and bought a photo gallery. He was quite successful as a photographer. In 1880 his son John C. HOWE became associated with the company and the studio became known as C. L. Howe & Son. He died in 1895.
