The Hıstory of Photography: The Journey of Capturing Images

Photography, now an inseparable part of our lives, traces its origins back to the 19th century. In 1826, French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in capturing the world's first known permanent photograph using a light-sensitive surface. This method, which he called “heliography,” required an exposure time of eight hours and produced a rather blurry result. However, it marked the first major step in the quest to capture images. Niépce's work led to a collaboration with French artist and chemist Louis Daguerre. In 1839, Daguerre introduced the "daguerreotype" process, named after himself. This method offered shorter exposure times and sharper results, significantly boosting the popularity of photography. Around the same time, English scientist William Henry Fox Talbot discovered the "calotype" process, based on a negative-positive system. Talbot's method allowed for multiple prints, greatly contributing to the reproducibility of photographs. Throughout the 19th century, photographic techniques rapidly advanced, and cameras became more accessible. The use of glass negatives, followed by celluloid film, made photography possible even for amateurs. In 1888, George Eastman launched a simple portable camera under the Kodak brand with the slogan "You press the button, we do the rest," and photography quickly spread as a popular hobby. By the early 20th century, color photography had developed, and the digital revolution transformed photography into its modern form. Photography became an essential tool for not only art but also for documenting history, journalism, scientific research, and daily life. The history of photography is a fascinating story of how humanity's desire to capture and share moments combined with technological innovations. This journey has been shaped not only by technical developments but also by changing perspectives of societies and individuals.
